This year the People’s Choice Award went to Shamrock Hills Vineyard & Winery for their Sweet Backroads White. You voted for it, now take a peek behind the label and learn the story of how it came to be!

Mike and Denise Riley discovered and bought the property in 2019 because they felt it was a hidden gem on the backroads of Ray County.  With its beautiful, wooded areas, an old homestead hidden on the back of the property, creek beds and Missouri Rock bluffs, they had found the perfect spot.

Fast forward to the beginnings of the winery a few years back, they headed to Augusta for a Grape Growers Field Day, and they were seeing all of these beautiful wineries outside of Augusta off the beaten path.  

Denise then mentioned to Mike that whenever they visit wineries, whether it’s Italy, Oregon or Missouri, the hidden gems are always off the beaten path and the back roads. To honor those hidden gems, they came up with the wine, named Sweet Backroads White.  The picture is a sketch of the old barn hidden on the property that was built in the 1800’s.

When Mike created Shamrock Hills Vineyard & Winery, he knew it was off the beaten path but that makes it even more special.  Together they built something they want people to come out and enjoy.  Not only award-winning wines but the ambience of the property, and the fellowship of others.  Offering plenty of food and live music Spring through Fall on the weekends, micro brews in addition to our wines and of course slushies, there is truly something for everyone to enjoy!

The Missouri State Fair is just TWO days away and if you are a wine lover, you’re in for a treat! This year, there are more ways than ever to experience the best of Missouri wines right here in our home state. 

First up, swing by the Missouri Wines booth in the Agriculture Building to snap a photo on the photobooth to share with everyone on social media. Also, in the Agriculture Building in our booth, the Missouri State Fair Winery Showcase will feature a different winery each day, offering you the chance to discover new favorites and taste their best wines. 

For those looking to deepen their knowledge, don’t miss the Wine 101 classes in the Missouri Wine Tent, where you can learn about the 5 S’s of wine tastings and create some perfect pairings thanks to Missouri Cattlemen’s Association, Missouri Beef Industry Council, Missouri Pork Association and Midwest Dairy!

Mark your calendars for Friday, August 8^th, and hop on the Missouri State Fair Wine Trail from 11 AM to 6 PM. This is a fantastic opportunity to sample and purchase wines from 10 different Missouri Wineries. 

Visit the Tourism Expo, on Thursday, August 14^th in the Lowell Mueller Assembly Hall, where we’ll be sharing wines from all over Missouri with a special tasting experience later in the day. It’s the perfect way to explore the diverse world of Missouri wines and plan your next Missouri wine country trip! 

Place your bid on Saturday, August 16 at the Best of Missouri Auction to take home a full case of the Governor’s Cup Winning Adam Puchta Winery Dry Vignoles. The wine is packaged in a hand crafted wooden crate made by former State Fair Director Mark Wolfe. The 2025 Best of Class Collection containing the 13 of the finest wines in the state is also up for grabs. The auction item has something for everyone, ranging from dry to sweet is also presented in commemorative wooden crate. All proceeds from the auction benefit Missouri 4-H and FFA.
