Behind the Label Dale Hollow Winery's Catawba

September 12, 2023

Every stroke of Beth Dale’s paintbrush tells a story as she creates the artwork that graces Dale Hollow Winery’s wine labels. In the case of the 2023 People’s Choice award-winning label — Dale Hollow Winery’s Catawba — Beth’s brush told of the pink hues of Catawba grapes, the light feeling of a sweet rosé and the Dale family tradition of feeding hummingbirds passing through mid-Missouri. Most importantly, every bottle of Dale Hollow wines tells the story of a family working together to offer patrons a sip of Stover, Missouri.Bottles of Dale Hollow Winery's Catawba

“We want our labels to tell a story. All wineries have some kind of story, and ours is about a family making wine in a small community we have lived in and loved going back multiple generations (to the 1800s),” Jesse Dale says.

Dale Hollow started on a whim with a casual conversation between brothers Jesse and Asher Dale in a garden. Both brothers had struck out after college but were looking to return to Missouri to start families and put down roots of their own. Their quaint hometown seemed the perfect place — as their grandfather said, “Why would you want to live anywhere else?”

So, a decade ago, the Dale brothers, with the support of their partners, Katy and Ana, and parents, Kenny and Beth, planted 1,000 grape vines on five acres of land, which the duo’s grandparents had purchased in the 1950s. The siblings returning home to the quaint countryside to work side-by-side was Beth’s dream and the inspiration for the name.

“When Asher and I were kids, probably age 5-8, Mom told us she wanted us to live as close as possible, and we could all be in one place and have a little wooden sign at the end of the driveway that says, ‘Dale Hollow,’’ Jesse recalls.

Since breaking the ground to plant their very first grapevine, Dale Hollow Winery has been a family affair. Katy’s ability to smell and taste subtle notes and flavors during the finishing and blending process, combined with Asher’s knack for chemistry, makes them a dynamic wine-making duo. Kenny manages the 3,000-vine, 10-acre vineyard. Both retired from their respective careers, he and Beth often welcome guests to the winery and tell them the story of Dale Hollow. This works great for new visitors to the winery and the Dale family. Jesse, Katy, Asher and Ana juggle working full-time and raising young families with the winery. Yet, the entire family makes every decision at Dale Hollow.

“We are a family winery from start to finish, and it’s evident in the entire vine-to-wine process. We all planted the first vines together, we pick and prune together and try to make business decisions as a family,” Jesse says.

Even the artwork for the labels is a family decision. While Beth is the resident artist, the Dale family provides her inspiration. In the case of the winning Catawba label, her daughter-in-law Katy saw Beth’s original hummingbird painting hanging on the wall and knew it would be the perfect choice. So, the pair worked together to highlight Beth’s artwork. Beth puts the family’s ideas to paper with strokes of a brush, and Katy digitizes the original artwork with strokes on a keyboard before they collaborate on the final logo design and choosing the perfect paper to print it on. When the label was finished, the family agreed it reflected their estate-crafted Catawba.

“Our Catawba showcases the classic flavors of this native, sweet rosé: red berries and watermelon candy. It’s fruit-forward and has a medium body with a crisp finish,” Katy says.

While the Dale family loves the fact the label features the natural beauty of Missouri wildlife, especially the adored hummingbird — one of the only birds that don’t eat grapes — they’re delighted Missouri wine enthusiasts chose the label for the award.

“It’s an incredible honor,” Beth says. “We tell anyone who comes to the winery that we couldn’t do what we do and share our passion without the loyalty of our customers. We feel like winning a People’s Choice is a testament to that loyalty, and we can’t thank them all enough.”

Jesse adds that the family gives credit to Beth’s artistry. “She found an outlet for her talent that people can enjoy on wine that we all make together.”Hummingbird Painting on Dale Hollow Catawba

Regardless of awards and accolades, the Dale family’s commitment to Missouri wines can be simply summed up by saying they’re passionate. They’re passionate about the vineyard sitting on family land, the wine they create, the experience patrons have in the tasting room, and sharing the story of Missouri wines with others.

“We like to visit with people and tell them the story firsthand in the tasting room where you can sit on the patio and overlook the vineyards that are so dear to us,” Jesse says. “We love that people enjoy the labels and the story, and when you are looking for wine for a special occasion, a gift or simply to enjoy at the end of the day, please remember your local wineries who work tirelessly year-round to get wine from the vine to the bottle.”

Peach Vignoles Granita

August 22, 2023

Looking for a delicious, fruity treat that isn’t too indulgent? Granita is similar to a sorbet, but the texture is different. It is a sort of mixture between shaved ice and sorbet. Traditional Sicilian granita has three ingredients: Fruit, water or juice and sugar. We have tweaked the traditional recipe to add ginger and honey for a complex and delicious flavor as well as replacing most of the fruit juice with Missouri wine. This change not only makes for a great tasting granita, but also helps achieve an icy texture without allowing the granita to become frozen too solidly.

Honey, wine, ginger, mint leaves

Peach Vignoles Granita Recipe

Ingredients:

3 lbs    Fresh peaches (approx. 9)

2 Tbsp Fresh ginger, grated

1 Tbsp Lemon juice

2 Tbsp Honey

¾ cup  Dry Vignoles wine*

Optional: Fresh mint leaves for garnish

*If you use a sweet or semi-sweet Vignoles, adjust the amount of honey to your desired sweetness level.

Instructions:

  1. Freeze a 9 x 13 pan for 30 minutes.
  2. Using a sharp knife, lightly score the base of each peach with a X. Bring a large saucepan of water to the boil. Using a slotted spoon, carefully drop in peaches and simmer gently for 2 minutes. Transfer the peaches to an ice bath.
  3. When cool enough to handle, use a small sharp knife to remove skins. Cut peaches off the stones and into chunks.
  4. Place peaches, lemon juice, ginger, honey and Vignoles in a blender and blend until smooth.
  5. Pour mixture into the prepared pan. Cover and place in the freezer for at least 1 hour or until the edges and the top are frozen.
  6. Using a fork, scrape the mixture into ice flakes. Return it to the freezer and repeat this every 30 minutes until you reach your desired consistency and it is fully frozen.
  7. Divide the granita between chilled serving glasses or bowls.
  8. Optional: Top with extra peach slices and garnish with fresh mint leaves.

This recipe for Peach Vignoles Granita is ideal for hot summer days, and the Missouri Vignoles makes it a truly unique and delightful dish!

Enjoying Wine on the Water

August 15, 2023

Tips for Floating and Boating with Wine!

There is no doubt that spending time on Missouri lakes, rivers, and streams leads to some of the best summertime memories. Enjoying Missouri wines on the water adds to the Show Me state experience all while providing that refreshing sip of delightful flavor. It’s important to always follow park rules and be respectful of other patrons and native creatures on Missouri waterfronts. Here is a list of tips that can help you safely enjoy wine on the water this summer.

  1. Choose appropriate stemware.

There are countless options for silicone, plastic, or stainless-insulated wine vessels on the market. Choose the right one for you that will allow you to fully experience wine on the go. Toss it in the cooler and be ready for a glass of wine when the time is right. Never pack along a real glass as thisTwo wine glasses cheering can be dangerous to you and others should an accidental mishap occur.

  1. Ditch the original bottle.

Since it’s not a wise idea to pack along a real wine glass, you should also leave behind the glass bottle of wine. Instead, pour the wine into a travel-safe bottle that you can place in a cooler and keep at an appropriate temperature. They make insulated bottles specifically for wine, but any sturdy water bottle will do the trick and allow you to pack your wine on the water.

  1. Search for alternative packaged wine.

There are several Missouri wineries that offer canned wine or pouches that are ready to chill and pack along wherever the water might lead this summer.

  1. Stay hydrated with water.

The hot Missouri sun on a long day of floating, boating, or swimming can put you at risk of dehydration. Always pack along plenty of H20. A good rule to follow is to drink two glasses of water to one glass of wine, especially on the hottest days.

  1. Enjoy wine responsibly on the water.

We encourage you to enjoy your favorite Missouri wine responsibly while you soak up the beauty that can be found throughout the state. Be safe and soak up the sweet Missouri sunshine!

Vignoles Missouri's Fruity Favorite

August 01, 2023

Whether you are looking for a sweet or dry style, Vignoles is your go-to white wine! This fruity favorite is the featured varietal for August.

This hybrid grape accounts for 15.4% of all grapes grown in Missouri, covering 262.2 grape bearing acres. This wine is sought after due to it being less susceptible to late frost damage with a later bud opening period. Best enjoyed chilled, this fruity and light wine has citrus, floral and tropical notes. Making it a staple wine that smells as pleasant as it tastes.

Vignoles pairs well with a variety of foods, especially hot and spicy dishes. It is great paired with bold flavors like spicy pork, chicken and cheeses, peppers, Mexican, curries and hot sauce. On the other side, this varietal can complement strawberries, apricots and cheesecake.

This varietal received numerous top honors at the 2023 Missouri Wine Competition. It claimed three Best of Class Awards – Best Dry White, Best Semi-Dry White, Best Sweet White. This varietal is clearly quite versatile, making it a winemaker’s common choice as a desired sweetness wine.

With its fruity flavors and luscious floral aroma, this varietal can easily be enjoyed on a warm Missouri summer day.

The Terrace at French Village

Completing the northern tip of the Ozark Highland Triangle, the winery stands in the old Werner Home built in 1887. However, the focal point is the beautiful 150 foot waterfall and sprawling wooden decks for which the winery has been named. The concept behind The Terrace at French Village was simply to create a friendly yet upbeat atmosphere where guests could enjoy live music and our wonderful wines.
